Unit Design and Lesson Planning
As a founding 1st and 2nd grade teacher-leader at Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School, I have led the development of bilingual "Expeditions" for both grades, rich interdisciplinary units that connect social studies and science content to literacy learning and art. Below is the expedition plan for our 2nd grade study, Manahatta: Island of Immigrants, a deep dive into the history of New York City through micro case studies of four key waves of immigration.
As a dual language school, we work particularly hard to ensure alignment in our foundational literacy instruction. Below the Expedition Plan, you'll find an example of vertical planning of the English and Spanish phonics instruction pacing, aligned to CCSS for Language and Foundational Reading Skills.
